ABOUT SHANELLE
TRADE: Electrician
YEARS IN PROGRAM: 1
ABOUT:
DID YOU PLAY SPORTS IN HIGH SCHOOL?
No, I was involved with theater and choir
DID YOU CONSIDER A CAREER IN CONSTRUCTION WHILE YOU WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL?
Never. I was a music and theater nerd who always expected to stay in the arts.
WHO INFLUENCED YOU? (TEACHERS, GUIDANCE COUNSELORS, FAMILY, FRIENDS, ETC.)
I had been working in technical theater for many years and knew I would nver survive a desk job.
WHY DID YOU ULTIMATELY CHOOSE A CAREER IN CONSTRUCTION?
The electrical field was always interesting to me and some reearch showed me that the opportunities and benefits are great.
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUNG PEOPLE CONSIDERING POST-SECONDARY CAREER OPTIONS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM TO CONVINCE THEM TO CONSIDER AN APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM?
College isn't the only option, although hey spend a lot of money and energy making it seem that way. An apprenticeship program is almost a fast track to a well paying career that won't cripple you with debt for 15+ years.
WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER PATH IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY?
I have been impressed with the integrity and work ethic of construction workers. I think there is a stereotype about construction workers being dumb or lazy or backward and I have quickly learned that that is false.
